You might not agree with me, but I think the first step in the home buying process is prayer. You definitely should be saving and budgeting, etc, which are next steps actually but prayer should be at the start of your day and I believe at the start of your purchase.
Before I jump in, if you’re not a prayer person, then think of this as advice to “sleep on it,” ask a parent, mentor or someone completely outside of the decision to help you “be right” about the decision. For me, prayer does these things, for you, it might mean staying in a cabin in the woods somewhere to drown the noise.
The point is that buying a home is a big six figure (in most cases) decision that most take lightly. With proper planning you can make your first home purchase be a foundational move for your entire future.
If you know me at all, you’ve probably heard me say that I work “By Relationship.” Not to be all mushy here but relationships are what Life is all about and for me it’s my relationship with God, my Family and my clients that make my life enjoyable.
So when you pray you aren’t going to ask God to give you a sign (although he might) but you should be praying for peace, wisdom and favor. Remember God is “like our Father” and we can pray to him like we would talk to our Dad.
The purpose of the prayer is to ask for God’s guidance for the right timing and the right home. We want God to put us in a place to make an impact FOR HIM and one that helps us fulfill our purpose. For those of you who are less spiritual and still reading, you’re at least wanting a place that will make you happy. God’s word says that we should find “FAVOR” with Him and man, so we would like God’s favor and blessing on those involved in the transaction (Realtors, Loan Officers, Inspectors, Seller’s, Etc.)
Last but not least, we want God’s wisdom for our purchase. Buying a home is extremely emotional and often we overlook certain things. It’s a great idea to pray for wisdom regarding the purchase.
I’m always impressed and encouraged when young couples want to go home to “sleep” on it or pray. It’s not being wishy-washy or non-committal, it’s having wisdom.
After praying a pray about your MOVE, don’t stop there, you should continue your conversation with God. It may feel one sided at times (afterall, it’s rare for there to be an audible conversation during prayer) but push through. He hears you and it’s therapeutic for those unaccustomed to a consistent prayer.
